Sunscreen Impact on Coral Reefs

Sunscreen Impact on Coral Reefs

Sunscreens, particularly the ingredient oxybenzone and to a lesser extent titanium dioxide, have been found in high concentrations in the coral reefs of Hawaii, US Virgin Islands, Australia, Japan and the Caribbean and are thought to be contributing to the bleaching effects and death of the animals that make up the bulk of the reefs. By wearing a sun protective long sleeve shirt, you can significantly decrease the amount of sunscreen you need to protect your skin (just a bit for your face, hands and lower legs) and thereby lower the amount of sunscreen you introduce into our waters!
